IHI secures contract for Kinder Morgan’s $2bn liquefaction project in Georgia, US

IHI E&C has secured a contract to provide engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning and startup services for Kinder Morgan’s $2bn natural gas liquefaction project at Elba Island, near Savannah in Georgia, US.

The Elba liquefaction project will have ten movable modular liquefaction system (MMLS) trains and use Shell’s small-scale liquefaction units, which will be integrated into the existing Elba terminal.

Upgrades will be made to the terminal to receive liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the new liquefaction facilities.

The existing Elba facilities will also be modified to include compression for vapour handling and new pumps for loading the LNG on vessels.

Upon completion, the Elba liquefaction project will have the capacity to process and liquefy around 2.5 million tonnes of LNG per year.

Kinder Morgan southern region pipelines president Norman Holmes said: "We are excited about this next step for our future LNG export project and look forward to working with IHI E&C to bring it to fruition."

IHI’s Houston office will carry out the initial engineering, procurement and construction planning activities for the project, which is yet to receive approval from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC).

The project execution will also feature instrumentation and electrical engineering, logistics and interface management, procurement, supply-chain expertise, as well as large-scale construction.

Kinder Morgan’s subsidiaries Elba Liquefaction Company and Southern LNG Company plan to construct natural gas processing and liquefaction facilities at the Elba terminal.

The facilities are associated with the Elba liquefaction project and will be situated at the Elba terminal on an 840-acre Elba Island.
